The York Rite Description: The York Rite or American Rite is one of several Rites of the worldwide fraternity known as Freemasonry. A Rite is a series of progressive degrees that are conferred by various Masonic organizations or bodies, each of which operates under the control of its own central authority. The York Rite specifically is a collection of separate Masonic Bodies and associated Degrees that would otherwise operate independently. The three primary bodies in the York Rite are the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Council of Royal & Select Masters or Council of Cryptic Masons, and the Knights Templar, each of which are governed independently but are all considered to be a part of the York Rite. There are also other organizations that are considered to be directly associated with the York Rite, or require York Rite membership to join such as the York Rite Sovereign College but in general the York Rite is considered to be made up of the aforementioned three. The Rite's name is derived from the city of York, where, according to a Masonic legend, the first meetings of Masons in England took place, although only the lectures of the York Rite Sovereign College make reference to that legend.rnrnThe York Rite is one of the appendant bodies of Freemasonry that a Master Mason may join to further his knowledge of Freemasonry. But the York Rite is not found as a single system world wide, and outside of the York Rite there are often significant differences in ritual, as well as organization. However in most cases provided that the Grand Body in question regards the parent "Craft" jurisdiction as regular, each distinct Order has recognized fraternal inter-relations with the respective Grand Body within the York system.

Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Supreme Council 33°, Northern Jurisdiction, USA Description: Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Supreme Council 33°, Northern Jurisdiction, USA
rnAttainment of the third Masonic degree, that of a Master Mason, represents the attainment of the highest rank in all of Masonry. Any Master Mason stands as an equal before every other Master Mason, regardless of position, class, or other degrees.
rnAdditional degrees are sometimes referred to as appendant degrees, even where the degree numbering might imply a hierarchy. Appendant degrees represent a lateral movement in Masonic Education rather than an upward movement. These are not degrees of rank, but rather degrees of instruction.
rnIn many countries, some craft lodges use Scottish Rite ritual in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees.
rnIn the United States, members of the Scottish Rite can be elected to receive the 33° by the Supreme Council. It is conferred on members who have made major contributions to society or to Masonry in general.
rnThe Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction designates its degrees in the following manner:
rnrn4° through 14°: Lodge of Perfection
rn15° and 16°: Council, Princes of Jerusalem
rn17° and 18°: Chapter of Rose Croix
rn19° through 32°: Consistory
rnThe Supreme Council is the governing body of the Scottish Rite in the various jurisdictions, and charters all subordinate bodies. Voting members of the Supreme Council are chosen from among those members who have obtained the 33°. These members are referred to as Active Members.

Ask a Freemason Description: Is there greatness in YOU? The best way to get information is to talk to a Mason -- either online or in person. You can ask questions of real Freemasons on our Live Forum, or you can use the "Find a Lodge" tab at the top of each page to link to the Grand Lodge website in your state. Most of these sites have Lodge Locators where you can find contact information for a Mason at a Lodge near you. That person, usually the Secretary of the Lodge, will answer your questions and provide you with additional information. If you would like, he can usually arrange a convenient time to meet, introduce you to some other members, give you a tour their building, and answer your questions.
